2018 OVERALL ACADEMICS EXCELLENCE IN SOUTH AFRICA

AMAKAN ELISHA AGONI

Amakan Elisha Agoni is an academic, a PHD candidate and a trained Electrical and Computer Engineer. After a brief stint in engineering practice in Nigeria, Amakan came to South Africa in August 2015 to further his academic career in Electrical Engineering at the University of Cape Town. 

During his master Degree program, Amakan excelled with distinctions in all his coursework; a feat that made his supervisor, Professor Mqhele Dlodlo to recommend him for an upgrade to a Doctoral Degree. The upgrade was also motivated by his research work in the area of the Fifth Generation of wireless communication (5G)- a trending area of research in wireless communication around the world.

Amakan completed his Master of Science in Engineering Degree before the standard duration of 2 years and graduated as the best candidate of 2017 set. He was awarded  an Ericsson scholarship for his final Thesis titled: Performance Analysis of FBMC over OFDM in Cognitive Radio Network. 

Upon completion of his master degree program, Amakan applied and was admitted as a PHD candidate at the UCT. Now in his first year of PhD, Amakan already has  two publications that were presented and published in a conference in September 2018. His third publication will be presented in Thailand in November 2018.

Amakan is not just an academic, he is a committed leader of people. He is deeply  active in the Nigerian Students’ Society (NSS) at the UCT. He is also a member of the Executive council of the National Association of Nigerian Students in South Africa (NANSSA).  He has served as the Treasurer of NSS. He is currently serving as the President of NSS and a board member of the International Student Forum (ISF) at the UCT. His efforts at the NSS helped in bringing former Nigerian High Commissioner to South Africa (Ambassador A.M Ibeto) to Cape Town for the first time during NSS event on the 28th of March 2018. 

For his excellent achievements acquired both in academic and leadership,  Amakan Elisha Agoni is nominated for the Overall Academics Excellence award in South Africa of the 2018 Nigeria Community Excellence Awards.
